The Local

I love reading local authors and I was so excited to learn that a book I was thrilled to read was actually from a local Annapolitan! I’ve been hearing tons of buzz around Excavations and as a person who had the chance to study in Greece many years ago (cough, cough, 1999, good grief), I was ready ready to jump back in. What I learned quickly is that 26 years is WAY too long and I’m ready to go back to Greece. Now! To be fair, things last a pretty long time around there, so I feel confident I will still see the ruins and artifacts I want to visit.

But I so enjoyed losing myself in this book. It was fun, it made me laugh out loud, and it made me wonder if maybe I missed my calling in archeology. I do tend to burn easily, so the lack of shade was on my mind through the whole read, but the details and characters were so rich, I could almost feel that sun again and see the blue of that ocean. It’s like no other blue on earth.

I hear the book is being turned into a series and I can’t wait to watch! I am ready to be transported to the dig site, all while falling in love with the characters again. It’s wonderful to read a book that is delightful, escapist, and yet touches on real issues with history, culture, and relationships. It’s a ton of fun and it was a great way to kick off my summer reads! Annapolis writers for the win!
