The Search for Inspiration
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I need to get out of my house in order to get anything done. As a writer and independent college counselor, I work from home. But that “office” has many drawbacks. Sure, the commute is exceptional. I can’t complain about the snacks (although the other members of my house seem to find ways to complain about that topic…or lack of that topic). I love that I can pop outside for a bit of fresh air in the garden if I need it. I don’t have a bad gig.
BUT. Sigh. There are SO many distractions at the house. Laundry always needs doing. So many things need cleaning. Those indoor plants don’t water themselves. Why does the floor look that way when we don’t allow shoes in the house? When am I going to go through that huge stack of papers that need to find a proper home? Oof, the basement needs a serious cleanout. The list is endless and it stares me in the face all the time, edging itself into my peripheral vision as I try to focus on my computer screen. I can’t focus when I see the cat fur. And that’s when the cat is not actively trying to sit on my lap or the keyboard itself while I type.
I realize that sometimes the best way to work is to get out; find my favorite third space. Sometimes it’s a coffee shop. Sometimes it’s Barnes & Noble or the public library. Sometimes it’s just a random spot outside. Today, I opted for a shared work space for women. I’m soaking up the cute decor in cheerful pinks and greens and hoping the disco ball twirls inspiration into my brain. So far it’s working. It’s strange how the noise of friendly chatter, the soothing radio music, and street sounds of downtown Annapolis can help me focus. But hey, I’ll take it. I hope you find a way to make your work spot a happier and more productive space.
